- That season was high-
- lighted by perhaps the
- greatest moment in Pete's
- career. In the seventh
- game of the World Series,
- with the bases loaded, Pete came out of the
- bullpen to save the game for the Cardinals
- and help them win the world championship.
-
- By the time he retired, in 1930, Pete had
- pitched a National League record of 90
- shutouts. He also set several other records
- -- including lowest earned-run-average
- (1.22) in a season by a National League
- pitcher with at least 300 innings pitched
- (since broken by Bob Gibson) and the
- most shutouts in a season (16). He was
- elected to the National Baseball Hall
- of Fame in 1938.
