  5.                                   game of the World Series,
  6. with the bases loaded, Pete came out of the
  7. bullpen to save the game for the Cardinals 
  8. and help them win the world championship.

  10. By the time he retired, in 1930, Pete had 
  11. pitched a National League record of 90 
  12. shutouts. He also set several other records 
  13. -- including lowest earned-run-average 
  14. (1.22) in a season by a National League 
  15. pitcher with at least 300 innings pitched 
  16. (since broken by Bob Gibson) and the 
  17. most shutouts in a season (16). He was 
  18. elected to the National Baseball Hall 
  19. of Fame in 1938.
